Passion for Community Service

Cynthia Lim has been a dedicated grassroots volunteer in Bukit Batok East for over 13 years. When she first learned about the CAREkaki programme by CaringSG, she took up the opportunity to support her residents who have families or children with disabilities.

All these years, Cynthia has never once wavered in her commitment to CAREkaki, which stems from her belief that volunteers play a crucial role in supporting families facing challenges. She recognises that within her own residential zone, many caregivers struggle with everyday tasks, often focusing solely on their families and neglecting their own needs. It was also through this volunteering journey of hers that led her to cross paths with Upeka, who is a devoted caregiver to her 13-year-old son with autism. The two bonded quickly over their shared passion for community service.

Building a Network of Support

With the help of CaringSG's CAREkaki programme, Cynthia and Upeka have been working together to create a support network that ensures CAREkakis are equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills to assist caregivers and residents in getting the help they need. The online modules and virtual training sessions Cynthia took part in through the CAREkaki programme also helped her build the confidence to handle the unique circumstances of different families.

Over the past three years, Cynthia and Upeka forged a close bond as they support one another in assisting caregivers of loved ones with disabilities. They share their experiences and insights with others to create a nurturing network for families in similar situations. Through their interactions, Cynthia was, and continues to be, deeply inspired by Upeka – a remarkable and dedicated mother who juggles her food business and role as a caregiver at the same time. Despite their own commitments, they make it a point to stay in touch through calls or WhatsApp to plan events and discuss issues that other families might be facing. One could say they were each other’s pillar of support too.

A notable moment in their shared journey was the CAREconnect Trishaw Ride event at Jurong Lake Gardens in 2022, organised by the CAREkakis and CaringSG. It was at this event that Cynthia met other caregivers, thanks to Upeka’s introduction. Cynthia recalled, “We held the tricycle event at Jurong Lake Gardens, and one caregiver brought her son along. Despite the rain forcing us to move our activities under a shelter, it was heartwarming to see how happy they were and how much they enjoyed the activities.” This moment resonated with Cynthia and how even simple activities can bring joy for families.. As a community friend, she is dedicated to being a reliable resource for residents, wanting them to know they can always count on her.

Cynthia values her friendship with Upeka, recognising her as a vital connection to other families in need of support. Cynthia explained that she and Upeka often come together to address the challenges faced by families, working collaboratively to find effective solutions. Through their efforts, the duo is building a larger network of support, ensuring that no family feels alone in their journey and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.

Empowering Volunteers to Make a Difference

With her experiences from interacting with caregivers, Cynthia could empathise with the stigma that caregivers face. The fear of being perceived as vulnerable and the doubts they have about their own capabilities made them hesitant to seek help. Cynthia believes it is crucial to approach each situation with an open mind, as experiences can vary greatly. She also called on others to join CAREkaki, so that they can come together to expand the circle of volunteers and foster a community where everyone can forge meaningful friendships and support one another.

Cynthia reminds volunteers, “Don’t be discouraged by differences; engage openly and form valuable connections.” Upeka adds, “While each family has its unique challenges, persistence and understanding are essential in overcoming obstacles and creating lasting support networks.”
