A Devoted Sister’s Journey
Sharon Tay, a devoted sibling who has lovingly cared for her little sister with disabilities for over two decades, has embraced the profound challenges and rewards that come with this journey. Sharon, a nutritionist, started a practice dedicated to helping persons with disabilities, caregivers, and individuals to improve their health through nutritional foods. Her work in this field fueled her desire to empower other families with people with disabilities.
Discovering Support through CaringSG and CAREconnect
As Sharon navigated her caregiving journey, she discovered the incredible programs and support services offered by CaringSG, especially CAREconnect. "I remember how impressed I was by the breadth of programming and support services they provide to caregivers like me," Sharon shared. The organisation's accessible resources, supportive community, and commitment to empowering caregivers resonated deeply with her.
One memorable experience was the Huli paddling event organised by CaringSG on Mother's Day this year. She brought her sister, who had never paddled before, to join in the fun. "Not only did my sister and I get to form many beautiful memories, and she was stretched to experience something very new to her, I also loved the opportunity to connect with the lovely people at CaringSG," Sharon recalled. She was particularly moved by the sense of community, as fellow caregivers took care of each other during and after the event, showing a level of care and attention to detail that was deeply appreciated.
Growing through CAREconnect
Sharon's involvement with CAREconnect has been transformative. "It’s continual learning for me. I love learning new ways of caregiving that enable my sister not just to get by, but to truly thrive and reach her full potential," she explained. The community and support she has found through CAREconnect have been invaluable, providing her with insights and skills to enhance her caregiving practices.
Having benefited from the community support from CAREconnect, Sharon has found creative ways to support and uplift other families as well, often recounting touching stories of transformation. One such story involves a child with disabilities who was initially reluctant to eat vegetables. Through the process of growing vegetables themselves, the child became excited about eating them. "Seeing that change was incredibly rewarding," Sharon said, highlighting the impact of her community efforts.
When asked about her experience with CaringSG and their CAREconnect programmes, Sharon said, "I have been looking high and low for communities like this, even wanting to start one myself.” What she appreciates most about CAREconnect is how accessible it is for caregivers like her, who must balance various responsibilities. The flexibility of their offerings, such as virtual webinars, allows her to participate at her own convenience. This kind of accessibility makes a huge difference in ensuring that caregivers can stay informed and engaged, even with the demands of caregiving and work.
The innovative approaches and comprehensive support provided by CAREconnect have inspired Sharon to think about expanding her own impact. Observing how engaging and interactive activities have positively affected others, she envisions creating a physical space dedicated to community engagement and nutrition education. She plans to explore opportunities to develop a space where she can offer hands-on workshops, nutrition consultations, and community events.
Encouragement for Fellow Caregivers
Sharon's message to fellow caregivers is one of encouragement: "Out of so many people in this world, your child or sibling with disabilities is given to you. Caregiving is very much a gift. Let’s treasure it together!” Sharon wholeheartedly recommends CAREconnect to other caregivers, praising the unique and creative experiences that CaringSG consistently provides.
