DESCRIPTION
This virtual workshop is designed to reframe our understanding of challenging behaviours. We will examine how energy regulation skillset influences an individual’s capacity to navigate their day, particularly when difficulties are encountered. Factors influencing and means of supporting energy regulation are explored from both a first-person autistic perspective, as well as developmental perspective. Practical guidelines for providing supports for energy regulation to increase connectedness and active engagement in a variety of contexts will be highlighted.
Autism Level UP!’s energy regulation tools and framework will serve as a foundation for this workshop. Modifications for the supports will be discussed for individuals at a variety of developmental levels (e.g., students who are not yet communicating using words, those who are emerging language learners, and those who are conversational). A neurodiversity affirming approach to goal writing will also be introduced.
Strategies for supporting individuals across the lifespan and at different developmental levels will be discussed. A focus will be placed on supporting autistic and neurodivergent individuals, but the tools have applicability for facilitating engagement for a wide range of people.
LEARNING GOALS

- identify the factors contributing to ongoing regulatory support across the lifespan for autistic individuals.
